Before You Start Anything — Find Your Why
The one thing most beginners skip — and why it costs them everything
You’ve probably done this before — and you’re not the only one.
You get motivated, decide you’re going to change your life, start something new - maybe a side hustle, a fitness plan, a new routine.
For a week or two, you’re all in. Then life happens. You get tired. Results are slow. And before you know it… you’ve stopped.
Not because you’re lazy. Not because the plan didn’t work.
Most people jump straight into the "how." How do I make money? How do I build a business? How do I get fit? And then, a few weeks later, they quit.
Not because the strategy was wrong. Because they never answered the one question that makes everything else stick: Why does this actually matter to me?
Your why is the engine. Everything else is just the vehicle. And without an engine, even the best vehicle goes nowhere.
Why your "why" matters
- Motivation runs out — purpose doesn't. Excitement fades within weeks. A deep personal why keeps you going when the results aren't there yet.
- It protects you from quitting too early. Most people give up right before the breakthrough. Knowing why you started makes you resilient enough to push past that point.
- It keeps you aligned. Without a clear why, you'll chase every shiny opportunity that comes along. Your why acts as a filter — helping you focus on what actually matters.
- It makes the sacrifice worth it. Building something real requires hard days, late nights, and moments of doubt. Your why is what makes all of that feel worth it.

Get still and get honest
Before you can find your why, you need to clear the noise. Put your phone down. Close the tabs. Give yourself 10 uninterrupted minutes. Ask: what do I actually want my life to look like? Not what your parents want. Not what looks good on social media. What do YOU actually want?

Ask "why" five times
Take your goal and keep asking why until you hit something that truly moves you. "I want to make more money." Why? "So I have freedom." Why does freedom matter? "So I can be present for my kids." There it is. That's the real why — and it's far more powerful than money alone.
Write your goal, then ask "but why?" five times in a row. The last answer is usually your truth.

Connect it to pain or purpose
The strongest whys come from one of two places: pain you never want to feel again, or a future you're deeply excited about. Think back to a moment when you said "never again" — or imagine the version of yourself you're working toward. Both are powerful fuel.
"My why is rooted in _______ because I never want to feel _______ again" — or — "because I want to become _______."

Write it down and make it visible
A why that lives only in your head is easy to forget on a hard day. Write it on a sticky note. Make it your phone wallpaper. Put it somewhere you'll see it every single day. When motivation runs out — and it will — your written why is what pulls you forward.
Example: "I'm building this because I want my family to have options, not obligations."

Let your why guide every decision
Every time you face a hard choice — push through, pivot, or quit — come back to your why. Does this action move you closer or further from it? Your why becomes your filter. It helps you say no to the wrong things, and yes to what actually matters.
Ask yourself weekly: "Is what I'm doing today aligned with why I started?"
